Letter, 1861 May 16, from Jake Weil in Montgomery, Ala., to his brother Josiah Weil, in Munich, Germany, in which Josiah is informed of Jake's commission as a lieutenant in the Confederate States Army Home Guard. Jake also details the inauguration of Jefferson Davis as President of the Confederate States of America, gives his opinion of Davis as a leader, and discusses the topics of slavery, the causes of the war, and the attitudes of mutual friends and family members toward the Confederacy.
